What to expect on this Retreat

March 29 - 31st

Day 1

We will plan to have each participant meet us directly at the trail head at 2:00pm for a welcome and a nice warm up ride to get acclimated with the desert. You will come prepared to ride, spin out the legs and get acquainted with the Moab style of trails. We will talk about basic body positioning and give tips for riding technical, rocky terrain. After the ride, we will head to our home away from home for the weekend, to check in, , and have some delicious dinner waiting for us! Later in the evening, we will have some mindfulness activities and late night laughs, and of course, treats to go around.

Day 2

Wake up to the smell of warm drinks and breakfast. We will enjoy a good meal and some stretching before loading up to take us to our trails for the day. As we make our way down to our final destination, we will be stopping to session different features along the trail. These opportunities are the perfect time to improve on skills, and features that you find challenging. We'll have a hearty lunch packed as we'll plan to be out on the trails the majority of the day with a good amount of miles. When we conclude our riding session, we will come home to a spread of appetizers and drinks as we shower and dinner is being made. During this time, the hot tub is a great break to soak your sore muscles and relax with a cold drink with new friends! Don't forget your swimsuit! We will continue the evening with great conversations, laughs, relaxing on the couches as we find our selves getting psyched for another day of riding!

Day 3

We'll start the day packing up our belongings before we enjoy a healthy breakfast and one more ride for the weekend! Lunches will be prepared and packed before we leave the condo to head off to the trails. Depending on the group, we have a number of options of trails to experience and as we get to know your ability level the past couple of days, we will inform you of which trail we will ride. We can take on some more technical terrain, or cruise on a fun ride to finish off the weekend. We can't wait to enjoy this weekend with you!!

ASDT MTB Directors & Guides

Julie Cornelius

Julie lives in Moab, UT and loves mountain biking, nutrition, traveling and being outdoors. She combines her passions by guiding mountain biking and working as a nutrition coach. She loves anything that gets her outdoors but can mostly be found on her mountain bike- shredding local trails, bike packing through the desert or traveling overseas to explore new areas with her bike. In the time that she has been riding bikes, she has seen many women join the sport and the outdoor communities. She is extremely passionate about helping women get into mountain biking and the outdoors. Her favorite rides are taking self proclaimed beginner mountain bikers on a challenging ride and seeing them overcome their fears. She is excited to be a part of the ASDT community and looks forward to helping more women get on bike, into the outdoors, and to also share her passion for nutrition and health. Julie is ICP Level 1 & 2 certified as well as WFA certified.

Joy Patten

Joy started mountain biking in 1995 in the glorious California coastal region of San Luis Obispo, where they have some of the best riding on earth. I started racing cross country in 1999 for Cal Poly Wheelmen. I enjoyed the hard work and satisfaction of cross country riding for many years. The fun of riding up the hill was knowing that the sweetest singletrack was waiting at the top.  After a while my bike handling skills improved and the descents became a roller coaster ride. Instead of fear I was inspired by challenging terrain. The adrenaline just took over. I gained self confidence knowing there was a gnarly trail out there that I could conquer. The self confidence I gained transfered to my every day life. The confidence helped my realize I could do what I put my mind to. I started racing downhill in 2005 and have found that my calling. The techniques I learned riding cross country for so many years is what made me a solid downhill-er. I took a two year break from racing to have my son and get him through his first year. November 2007 I started racing again at the expert level. I moved up to PRO in the winter of 2009. Over the year I have developed many more skills to pass on. It all starts with the right foundation though. Joy is PMBIA Level 1 certified and First Aid certified.

I want to purchase a ticket and share a room with a friend, how do I complete this order?
One of you will need to have the ticket in your name and purchase the room. Once the room is reserved, we will get a hold of you and get the information of your friend joining.

Where should I fly into?
  • Salt Lake City : is a 4.5 hour drive to Moab.
  • Grand Junction, CO : is a 2.5 hr drive to Moab
  • Moab, UT: there are selected airlines that will fly directly into Moab.

I don't want to fly with my bike, do you have any demos available for me to rent?
Unfortunately, we don't have demo's on hand, there are plenty of bike rental shops in Moab that we can put you in contact with. We recommend everyone bring their bike that they're comfortable riding on, especially if this is your first time in Moab.

What is the ability level you need to be to join this Retreat?

We ask that each participant joining is at least an intermediate rider.

Intermediate is a wide range, but if you are comfortable on terrain that you have to maneuver the bike, and able to get off the ground with the bike, that is an intermediate. If you can get your front wheel up, pump, manual, brake effectively, get air and control the bike, then the rider is an intermediate.

Advanced is comfortable with everything listed above and likes to ride steep, loose, gnarly trails.

When I purchase my ticket, who will contact me?
You will get a welcome packet along with all the information you will need for this retreat via email. You will also hear from one of our ASDT MTB Directors, Julie Cornelius who will send you a survey to fill out so we can get a better idea of who all is coming and making sure that the riders are at the ability level of the trails we are riding.

Should I bring tools?

If you have a multi-tool, spare tubes and tire irons yes please bring them. Coaches will have tools also.

Should I use flat pedals or clip ins?

Flat pedals preferred if you have them

"It was worth every penny. You get to feel like a bad ass on a bike then come back to the condo to get waited on and just relax with new friends."

"No pressure riding and coaching on climbing and descending. No drop ride with features you can clinic. Great healthy food choices,... so if you like junk food or drinks BYOB. Overall 3 days was perfect. Condo worked out A okay, shared bathroom. Best swag ever with the Osprey 3L and flat fixing kit. Can’t wait to try out the Liv bike seat I won! High fives all around to my new friends who can now shred! Woot woot"

"Everyone was a little nervous coming into the weekend asking "what if I'm the slow one" or "what is it going to be like to be in a condo with strangers"? It didn't take long for all of us to connect with each other; after all, we have a common love of biking! The leaders were instantly welcoming, and we became cheerleaders for each other on the first ride. I can ride my bike anytime; I was really there for the experience of meeting new women, laughing and getting better on the trails - it delivered!"

"Prior to this retreat, I was hesitant about my skills as a rider and doubted myself on the trails. Throughout the weekend, however, I was reminded that riding isn't always about that - it's about returning to the bike day after day for the sake of immersing yourself in dirt, with women that make you laugh, and you can begin again to challenge yourself on the trails."

"It was a lot more fun than I anticipated. It's always nerve wracking to stay in such close quarters with strangers. But, we became friends right off the bat. It's amazing when you're under those circumstances of trepidation and challenge, how women can bond together."

"Definitely do it! It was an amazing experience and I really loved it!

"Great fun, educational, confidence building, amazing coaches, bikes, trails and company!"

"I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend! The coaches were fantastic and the accommodations were great. I can’t wait for the 2nd annual retreat!"
